Five-Minute Tours: 'The Bauhaus in Texas' at PDNB Gallery, Dallas

The Bauhaus in Texas at PDNB Gallery, Dallas. Dates: February 19 - April 2, 2022.
Featured Artists: Carlotta Corpron, György Kepes, Ida Lansky, Barbara Maples, Beverly Wilgus and Jack Wilgus
Via the gallery:
PDNB Gallery addresses the subject of women in abstraction in the exhibition, The Bauhaus in Texas. The theme of the show is the influence of the Bauhaus in Germany, and the New Bauhaus in Chicago. The Direct tutelage of three great artists, László Maholy-Nagy, György Kepes (featured in the PDNB show), and the Texas artist, Carlotta Corpron, influenced a whole generation of female students at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas. TWU had the first studio art program in Texas.
Carlotta taught photography at Texas Woman’s University from the 1940's - 1980's. She and her students, Ida Lansky, Barbara Maples, Beverly Wilgus are included in PDNB’s show. Their approach is reflected in photographs by Bauhaus mentors Maholy-Nagy, Kepes who both taught briefly at the college, and Corpron.
Abstraction in these photographs is revealed through experiments with light, solarization, exposures, and photograms. This exhibition features examples of all of these. The works cover 1930 ‘s to the 1970’s.
The inclusion of these Texas artists in the expansive exhibition, Women in Abstraction, at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, states the importance of not only the threads of the Bauhaus and abstraction in our state in the 1940's and 1950's, but also the impressive, visionary art program of a Texas woman’s college.
A gallery talk with University of Texas, Dallas Professor of Art and Architectural History, Charissa Terranova,
and Artist and Texas Woman's University Professor of Art Emerita, Susan kae Grant is schedule Saturday, March 26th at 2pm in conjunction with the exhibition.

Signs of the Times at Photographs Do Not Bend (PDNB) Gallery
Dates: February 15 - May 9, 2020
Featured Artists: Shelby Lee Adams, John Albok, Jesse Alexander, Lucienne Bloch, Peter Brown, Patty Carroll, Jack Delano, Morris Engel, Elliott Erwitt, Walker Evans, David Graham, Paul Greenberg, William Greiner, Earlie Hudnall, Birney Imes, Jimmy & Dena Katz, Philip Lamb, Christo / Ugo Mulas, Bill Owens, David Pace, Walter Rosenblum, Arthur Rothstein, Al Satterwhite, Jeffrey Silverthorne, Neal Slavin, & Wu Jialin.
This thoughtful group exhibition began with a long-ago conversation between Gallery Director, Burt Finger, and the late Ilona Albok Vitarius, daughter of John Albok. While looking through John Albok’s vintage photographs together, Ilona thought of an exhibition featuring signs. Of course John Albok created many great images of Manhattan that included an eclectic number of signs. Ilona even named the show, Signs of the Times.
The discussion between Burt and Ilona spawned many ideas regarding the significance of signs in Albok’s photographs, and other street photographers. The signage bears fruit, giving us references of the era, the market, design, cultural messaging, political advertising messages, etc. These signs can be considered time capsules.
Signs of the Times is a project of love and remembrance, a tribute to Ilona Albok Vitarius.

For the third year running, Raymond Butler and Christopher Machorro will be organizing Black Market Bodega, a small works group invitational built around the theme of a neighborhood store. This season’s Gallery Artist Group Show features four artists who have shown regularly at Plush. Jacqueline Blanco will present new small scale oil paintings based in studio performance photos of cake splattered faces. Famed Dallas Oak Cliff jazz musician Dennis Gonzalez has been making small talisman objects, which address esoteric themes. Norman Kary’s current chalkboard pieces reflect his early fascination with both magic and drawing. Laura J. Lawson: Jovian Resonance at Ro2 Art Gallery, Dallas. Dates: September 9 – October 14, 2023.
Via the gallery:
Ro2 Art is proud to present Jovian Resonance, an exhibition of new work by Dallas-based interdisciplinary artist Laura J. Lawson. The exhibition will open September 9 and remain on view through October 14, 2023, at Ro2 Art located at 2606 Bataan St., Dallas, TX.
In Jovian Resonance, Laura J. Lawson creates a new way of interpreting and understanding the orbital resonance of Jupiter's system of ninety-five moons. Lawson playfully visualizes the moon system’s resonance and topology, particularly the gravitational relationships between Ganymede, Europa, and Io, with references to mythology, science fiction, and art history. Each moon, ranging in scale from 2 to 48 inches in diameter, is painted on a translucent substrate with acrylic inks so that light passes through the surface of the painting. The delicacy of the surface becomes a metaphor for the act of discovery of these far off moons. The ethereal and luminous color Lawson achieves through pouring, layering, and surface manipulation makes each piece feel like a jewel; taken together, the moons become a precious collection of exquisite detail. Ultimately, Jovian Resonance frames the seemingly abstract and distant astronomical discoveries of Jupiter’s system of moons into radiant paintings that depict moments of interconnectedness, curiosity, and community.
